One of the most overlooked yet deeply rewarding acts of worship is the dhikr (remembrance of Allah) performed immediately after the obligatory prayers. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave us a precise set of adhkar to recite after each Salah.
Why Dhikr After Prayer?
Allah says in the Quran: "So when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah while standing, sitting, or lying on your sides." (Quran 4:103)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever glorifies Allah (SubhanAllah) thirty-three times after every prayer, praises Him (Alhamdulillah) thirty-three times, and magnifies Him (Allahu Akbar) thirty-three times, totalling ninety-nine, and completes the hundred by saying 'La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir' — his sins will be forgiven even if they are as much as the foam of the sea." (Muslim)
The Core Tasbeeh (33-33-34)
After every fard (obligatory) prayer, recite:
Subhanallah — 33 times
Subhanallah — "Glory be to Allah"
Alhamdulillah — 33 times
Alhamdulillah — "All praise is for Allah"
Allahu Akbar — 34 times
Allahu Akbar — "Allah is the Greatest"
Then complete with: La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir.
Tasbeeh Fatima — A Special Gift
Ali (RA) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught his daughter Fatima (RA) and him to say before sleeping: SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times — saying it is "better for you than a servant." (Bukhari & Muslim)
Ayat ul Kursi After Prayer
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever recites Ayat ul Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except death." (Nasa'i, Ibn Hibban)
Recite Ayat ul Kursi (Quran 2:255) immediately after completing the tasbeeh.
Al-Mu'awwidhat (Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas)
After Fajr and Maghrib specifically, recite each of the last three surahs of the Quran 3 times. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said these three surahs suffice for everything. (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi)
Making It a Daily Practice
- Keep a tasbih (prayer beads) to count the 33-33-34
- Do not rush away from the prayer mat immediately after Salah
- Set aside 5 minutes after each prayer for dhikr
- Use the DuaSalaam app for all 113 Masnoon duas — many are specifically for post-prayer
Explore all post-prayer adhkar on the DuaSalaam Duas page.
