The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) demonstrated Islam in every aspect of his life — not just in prayer and fasting, but in eating, sleeping, walking, and speaking. Following his example (Sunnah) in daily life is a form of worship that brings barakah and closeness to Allah.
1. Begin with Bismillah
Say Bismillah before every action — eating, drinking, writing, entering the car, starting work. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Any important matter that is not begun with Bismillah is cut off from blessing." (Ibn Majah)
2. Use the Right Hand
Eat, drink, give, and receive with the right hand. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "None of you should eat with his left hand or drink with it, for Shaytan eats and drinks with his left hand." (Muslim)
3. Enter with the Right Foot
Enter the masjid, your home, and any good place with the right foot first. Exit with the left foot first. This is a simple Sunnah that makes every entry intentional.
4. Greet with Assalamu Alaikum
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of that which will strengthen love between you? Spread the salam among yourselves." (Muslim)
5. Eat on the Floor or at a Low Table
The Prophet (peace be upon him) never ate at a raised dining table. Eating at floor level is a Sunnah that instills humility.
6. Eat with Three Fingers
The Prophet (peace be upon him) would eat with three fingers and lick them after eating. This minimises waste and teaches gratitude for food. (Muslim)
7. Drink in Three Sips
The Sunnah is to drink sitting down, in three sips, breathing outside the cup. The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade blowing into a drink or drinking in one breath. (Bukhari)
8. Say Alhamdulillah When Sneezing
When you sneeze, say Alhamdulillah. The person next to you says Yarhamukallah (May Allah have mercy on you), and you reply Yahdikumullah wa yuslihu balakum. (Bukhari)
9. Make Dua When Entering the Toilet
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith — "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from male and female evil spirits." (Bukhari)
10. Miswak Before Prayer
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "If it were not that I would be overburdening my Ummah, I would have ordered them to use the miswak before every prayer." (Bukhari) Using a miswak or toothbrush before wudu is a beloved Sunnah.
11. Smile — It Is Charity
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Smiling in the face of your brother is charity." (Tirmidhi) A simple smile transforms interactions and earns reward.
12. Look After Your Neighbour
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was so emphatic about neighbours' rights that the companions thought he would make them inheritors. (Bukhari & Muslim). Check on your neighbours, especially the elderly.
13. Sleep on the Right Side
The Sunnah before sleeping: perform wudu, recite the sleeping duas, and lie on the right side facing the Qibla. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Lie on your right side." (Bukhari)
14. Make Dua When Looking in the Mirror
Allahumma anta hassanta khalqi fahassin khuluqi — "O Allah, just as You have made my outward form beautiful, make my character beautiful." (Ahmad)
15. End the Day with Istighfar
The Prophet (peace be upon him) sought forgiveness from Allah more than 70 times a day. (Bukhari). End each day by saying Astaghfirullah (I seek forgiveness of Allah) abundantly. It opens the gates of rizq, removes stress, and purifies the heart.
