Pillar 1 of 5
Shahada (Declaration of Faith)
الشَّهَادَة
The declaration of faith is the first and most fundamental pillar of Islam. It is the testimony that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger.
This declaration is the gateway to Islam. A person becomes Muslim by sincerely reciting the Shahada with understanding and conviction.
Step-by-Step Guide
1
Understand the Meaning
Before reciting, understand that the Shahada affirms belief in the oneness of Allah (Tawheed) and acceptance of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) as the final messenger.
2
Purify Your Intention
Make sincere intention (niyyah) in your heart that you are declaring this faith for Allah alone, not for any worldly benefit.
3
Recite the First Part
Testify to the oneness of Allah:
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ
Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah
"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah"
4
Recite the Second Part
Testify to the prophethood of Muhammad (ﷺ):
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ
Wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasul-Allah
"And I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah"
5
Live by the Shahada
After declaring faith, strive to live by its principles: worship Allah alone, follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and avoid shirk (associating partners with Allah).
